Abstract

The earthing system is an important component in electrical installations which aims to flow current to the earth safely, as well as protect devices and users from potential electrical hazards. Generators are one example of equipment that needs to be secured using an earthing system. The 2011 General Requirements for Electrical Installations (PUIL 2011) have determined that the standard electrical earthing resistance value in Indonesia is <5 ohms. Measurements of the earthing system on generator set equipment at the Jakarta State Polytechnic found that the resistance value of the earthing system exceeded the established standard, namely 16,524 ohms. This research was carried out to improve the resistance value of the earthing system so that it meets PUIL standards. The method used in this research is the rod method, which begins with carrying out a calculation simulation to determine the distance, installation depth and thickness of the new electrode to produce the desired new resistance value. After the parameter values are obtained, the new electrode will be connected in parallel with the existing ground electrode, then bentonite will be added around the ground area to absorb water and retain water in its structure. The results of the design analysis showed that the new electrodes would be installed with a distance between points of 5 meters, a rod installation depth of 25 meters and a rod thickness of 5/8 inch. The measurement results showed that the resistance value of the new electrode before paralleling was 3.447 ohms. After the two electrodes are connected in parallel, the earth resistance value at the installed location is 2.853 ohms.
